Prince Edward Island Cultural Organisation History
FilmPEI, formerly known as the Island Media Arts Co-operative Limited, was founded in 1978 in Charlottetown. It is a non-profit, artist-driven organization that works to support media artists. It provides a platform for skill development and idea exchange, as well as resources for self-production, distribution, and presentation. With more than 200 members, the co-operative is a vital institution in the local media arts community, providing mentorship and access to essential equipment and post-production facilities.
In 2018, FilmPEI expanded to become P.E.I.’s first interdisciplinary media arts cultural center, moving to a larger space equipped with a production studio, sound stage, editing suites, event space, and detachable seating.
The Canada Cultural Spaces Fund promotes the enhancement of physical conditions for arts, history, culture, and creative innovation. The Fund supports restoration and building projects, the purchase of specialist equipment, and feasibility studies for cultural institutions.
