What Is The University of Limpopo (UL)?
The University of Limpopo is a relatively recent university resulting from the amalgamation of the University of the North and the previous Medical University of South Africa. The merger occurred in January 2002. UL is one of numerous TVET colleges.
The Medical University of South Africa (MEDUNSA) was created in 1976 to provide training facilities and tertiary education for students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds in Allied Health, Nursing Sciences, Dentistry, and Medicine to satisfy South Africa’s health needs.
The UL campus is located northwest of Pretoria. It has an area of more than 350 hectares and borders Ga-Rankuwa Township. It is easily accessible by both rail and road. Scheduled bus and taxi services operate between Do. George Mukhari Hospital and Pretoria.
The University of the North was established under the expansion of the University Act of August 1, 1959. This Act includes provisions for the construction of racially exclusive universities to accommodate black students in South Africa. Here are some facts concerning UL’s history:
- The University of the North was constructed about thirty kilometers from Polokwane, a town in Limpopo Province.
- This was previously a college overseen by the University of South Africa’s academic trusteeship.
- The school’s foundational association with the United States terminated when the South African Parliament passed the University of the North Act.
