Assaults On Law Enforcement In US Reached 10-Year High In 2023, FBI Says

According to a recent FBI study released on Tuesday, the number of assaults on American law officers hit a 10-year high in 2023, with over 79,000 recorded officer attacks. The research examines patterns in violence against police enforcement in the United States by analysing data from state, municipal, federal, and other authorities.

Cops Were Shot And Assaulted

It demonstrates that there are an increasing number of policemen being shot and abused. FBI officials stated that in 2023, agencies reported 466 firearm assaults, the most in ten years. This is an increase from the less than 200 cops who were shot and assaulted in 2014.

In 2023, there were 60 officers slain as a result of criminal acts; in 2021, there were 73 and 61 officers killed in 2021.

Criminal Conduct

According to FBI authorities, even while those numbers have decreased over the past three years, there have been more cop fatalities as a result of criminal conduct during that time than at any other point in the previous 20 years.

The report states that the average experience of those killed between 2014 and 2023 as sworn officers was 12 years.

Between 2019 and 2023, over 230 officers were reported to have died inadvertently while performing their duties. Thirty of those police were struck by a car, and the majority of those officers—57%—died in car crashes.
